Math Fun Fact #1 - The Mobius Strip

What is the least number of sides an object has? Many people may say that a sphere has only 1 side, but a sphere has 2 sides - Inside and outside of the sphere are 2 different sides. You only count the one outside to calculate surface area. But do you know there are actually1 sided objects. The Mobius strip is one of those special objects. It was discovered by A.F. Mobius(1790-1868).

As you can see, there is only one side. So how do you make a Mobius strip? First get a STRIP of paper. Twist one end 180 degrees and glue both ends together and you have a Mobius strip. You can do a lot of interesting things with a mobius strip. Try cutting it into half LENGTHwise. You should get a BIG loop with two twists. You can give your strip 2 twists, glue both ends and cut them LENGTHwise. You will get 2 linked loops. Try the same with 3 or more twists for the fun of it!
